Empowering Agriculture: The Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE)

Agriculture has always been at the heart of Nigeria’s economy and livelihood. It not only feeds the nation but also provides employment opportunities and supports economic growth. In this dynamic sector, the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE) plays a pivotal role in driving innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
NIAE: A Legacy of Agricultural Engineering
Established in 1975 as the Nigerian Society of Agricultural Engineers (NSAE), NIAE has a rich history rooted in advancing the science and art of engineering in agriculture. Its founding members, including Prof. Cargil, Dr. L. Onafeko, Engr. D. Osobu, Mr. Hewit, and Prof. Aboaba, set the stage for an institution dedicated to promoting agricultural engineering education, research, and practice.
The inaugural conference held in Benin City in 1967 marked the beginning of a journey to transform the agricultural landscape. However, the challenges were not without their share of adversity, including a three-year civil war between 1970 and 1974, which halted formal associations of Agricultural Engineers.
Growth and Evolution
Despite these challenges, NIAE’s commitment to its mission remained unwavering. By 1999, NSAE merged with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), leading to a transformation into the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE). This change elevated NIAE to one of the divisions of NSE, and the title of the leader shifted from President to Chairman.
Today, NIAE continues to thrive and expand its reach, with a membership that has grown significantly. As of May 21, 2021, NIAE boasts a diverse membership base:
Student Members: 1,641
Affiliate Members: 803
Corporate Members: 2,267
Fellows: 154
With a National Secretariat located at the National Centre of Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) in Ilorin, Nigeria, and plans for a liaison office in Abuja, NIAE’s presence is felt across the nation. The institution is managed by the National Executive Council (NEC), consisting of elected executives and six regional chairmen.
